Measure Me
Video installation-MA Athens School of Fine Art
The relationship with the Self: performances, measurements, accountabilities, consists of one video installation with the title Measure me, 2013 (video series), and three autonomous videos (I 'll be your mirror, 2012, My father's belongings, 2012, I' m always here when you ask for me, 2013). The works form an artistic corpus with different themes, but a common denominator.
The videos are self-referential - autobiographical works and the experiential / empirical data is strongly incorporated in the project. The issues dealt, are the relation with the self, (female) identity and otherness, the relationship of self (ego) with the family, which is based in dynamics of power and imposition. The relationships within the family are ultimately metaphors of social relations, relations between ruler and subjugated.
The aesthetics of the image and the space is common in all the videos. The white wall and the gray floor are dominant characteristics, the space generates an indifferent, almost sterile atmosphere. Moreover, the exclusion of events - narratives from their normal, original environments, clearly shows that there is no intention to create a documented, archival work. The transfer of the narration in an aesthetically neutral space accentuates and enhances the metaphor, as well as the ambiguity and ambivalence of the work.
More specifically, in the series Measure me I am "exploring" my own body in order to approach the body in general. Starting from personal experiences and having been influenced from works where the grotesque, the 'other is 'marching', I seek to understand and approach fears and worries, which probably derive from the feeling of deviation, according to the frames that the western/civilized society has set as normal. So, I approach the bizarre, the other, through my own body, constructing a new identity through otherness.
